Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals is underway!

The Knicks have the chance to win their first championship since 1973, while the San Antonio Spurs are seeking to keep their season alive (8:30 ET, ABC).

Knicks on a 15-2 run

88-85 Knicks with 1:59 to go, as the Spurs have missed nine of their last 10 shots with the season hanging in the balance.

Karl-Anthony Towns just fouled out, sending Victor Wembanyama (18 pts, 14 reb) to the line for two.

With Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox struggling, the Spurs are searching for offense late in the Frost Bank Center.

Jalen Brunson (40 pts) and the Knicks are at it again, coming back late to eliminate the Spurs’ lead.

The Knick captain just keeps grinding away. His mentality is inspiring. On a night where no one beyond Dylan Harper is shooting that well, he’s been the force driving New York.

He’s the first Knick to score 40+ in a Finals game, setting a franchise record.

83-79 Spurs with 6:12 to go, as Jalen Brunson (36 pts) stops and starts to shake Wemby and score in the lane.

“That’s as crafty as it gets,” said Tim Legler.

De’Aaron Fox (7 pts on 3-for-11 shooting) re-enters the game for Stephon Castle (4 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast), who hasn’t been able to find his jumper all night.

The Knicks just keep pushing, no matter the circumstances.

“You can feel the anxiety and the crowd starting to rise,” said Richard Jefferson.

The threes are falling

Landry Shamet cut the lead to six with a 3-pointer, but Devin Vassell (10 pts, 6 reb, 2 3PM) responded with a long-distance shot his own on the other end, pushing it back to 80-71 Spurs with 8:51 to go in the game.

Karl-Anthony Towns (2 pts, 9 reb) has been limited to just 18 minutes so far tonight, hamstringing the Knicks’ ability to play five-out basketball.

We saw Mikal Bridges log a few minutes as the ostensible center earlier, as Mike Brown looks for other options.

De’Aaron Fox noted at Friday’s media day that guarding five shooting threats required an additional level of discipline from the Spurs. We’ll see when Brown comes back with Towns down the stretch.

The Knicks closed the period on a 12-3 run, as the Spurs hit just a single basket in the last 2:51, to give themselves a solid chance of closing out a championship tonight.

Jalen Brunson (30 pts on 10-for-21 shooting) is the lead man for New York, while Dylan Harper (21 pts on 8-of-13 shooting) is the lead scorer for San Antonio.

The Knicks are still shooting just 32.4% from the field, but they’re hanging around, as they have all series.

“We’ve got to win, no matter what it takes,” said Harper.

Harper (21 pts) has come up big with the Spurs’ season on the line. He’s preternaturally calm for a rookie, with a polished scoring games that belies his years, and a major reason the Spurs have a 24-0 lead in bench points tonight.

Every time he touches the ball, keep an eye on him. He knows where he’s going, and he knows how to take the angles to get there.

“It’s impressive,” said Richard Jefferson. “He’s been the best player for the San Antonio Spurs tonight.”

Julian Champagnie (14 pts, 4-for-6 3PM) is hot to start the second half, helping the Spurs earn a 51-41 lead with 9:29 to go in the third quarter.

The Brooklyn native has been a consistent factor in this series, both as a shooter and a presence on the boards.

An old-school score for an old-school game, as Devin Vassell (4 pts) beats the buzzer to give the Spurs a boost going into the break. It’s the lowest-scoring half of the Playoffs for New York.

The Spurs are shooting 34.1% from the field, while the Knicks are at 29.5%. This has been a physical, defensive contest, featuring four lead changes and two ties.

Jalen Brunson (16 pts) is the only Knick in double figures, as is Dylan Harper (11 pts) for the Spurs. But Victor Wembanyama (9 pts, 9 reb, 5 blk) is not far behind.

San Antonio’s earned an 18-6 advantage in points in the paint so far.

The Spurs have stopped doubling Brunson as aggressively, staying home on shooters and freeing him up to go on the attack.

It’s a welcome sight for the Knicks, who are still searching for offense.

This feels like a Game 7, not a Game 5, at the moment — both teams are on edge, with the Spurs benefitting from their athleticism and the support of the home crowd.

The San Antonio defense has been physical and active, putting pressure on the visitors. The Knicks have gotten nothing easy tonight.

OG’s at 50.6% from 3-point range in this Playoffs — he’s been lights-out.

The 1973 New York Knicks famously featured five future Naismith Hall of Famers — Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere and Willis Reed.

Their connectivity was legendary, featuring all-time ball movement under Red Holtzman. All five averaged in double figures during the regular season and the Playoffs, with Jerry Lucas clocking in just behind, before they upset Wilt Chamberlain and the Los Angeles Lakers in Finals.

This Knicks team is reminiscent of those champions, who brought a title home to New York more than a half-century ago.

Their chemistry and love for one another is evident, and a constant theme at Media Days.

Their team balance is elite — Brunson’s the head of the spear; Anunoby and Bridges take pressure off him; Towns and Hart hold it all together. They’re more than the sum of their parts.

The 1990s Knicks are better remembered at this point, but these Knicks have a lot of the 70s in them. We’ll see if there is championship glory in their future as well. They have their first chance at it tonight.

Dylan Harper of the San Antonio Spurs could be key to his team’s chances tonight in Game 5.

NBA.com’s Steve Aschburner has three things to watch in Game 5 for you, including the possibility of seeing more of incandescent rookie Dylan Harper.

“Harper, averaging 16.3 points in the Finals after 11.8 during the season, still is coming off the bench. But teammate De’Aaron Fox’s uneven play, particularly in Game 4, has some fans and media folks clamoring for minutes beyond Harper’s current 32 per.  

Consider each guard’s work alongside the most important Spur so far this series:  

  • Wembanyama and Fox have a -1.2 net rating in the four games, the Spurs scoring about 105 points per 100 possessions while giving up about 106. 
  • Wemby and Harper are at +9.8, based on 111 points per 100 offensively and about 101 defensively.”

“Hart is realistic about who he is as a basketball player and understands the adage: ‘Be a star in your role.’

‘It takes humility and just a willingness to sacrifice,” Hart said. “We’re in the NBA Finals. There are millions of people watching. It’s easy to get wrapped up in human nature of wanting to get recognition, wanting to score the ball, wanting to show people what you can do on the biggest stage. 

‘That’s not everyone’s calling and not everyone’s assignment. I know for me, that’s not really my assignment. It takes a little bit of time to find that humility. For me, I found that with prayer and my faith.’”
