The Vegas Golden Knights are 20 minutes away from taking a 2-0 series lead back to Sin City in the Stanley Cup Final. Brett Howden has the Golden Knights up 2-0 over the Carolina Hurricanes with one period left in Game 3.
After opening the scoring in the first period, Howden authored another gem of a goal in the second period when he zipped through a mile-wide gap in the Hurricanes’ defense and beat Frederik Andersen to the post.
That tally was Howden’s 13th of the playoffs, which ties Jonathan Marchessault for single-postseason franchise record. Howden is quickly flying up the list of Conn Smythe Trophy favorites, and he still has one period left to complete the hat trick.
For the Hurricanes, whatever territorial edge they had in the first period was completely eliminated in the second. Vegas completely stifled the Carolina offense and made it nearly impossible for the Canes to reach the slot for quality scoring chances. Rod Brind’Amour shook up his lines, but it didn’t seem to have much effect.
Additionally, the ESPN broadcast reported that Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb was taken to the hospital after a slap shot struck him in the face in the first period.
