Live updates: Iran war news; Kuwait’s airport attacked as fresh Iran-US strikes strain ceasefire

Diplomatic advisor to the United Arab Emirates President Anwar Gargash in Lucerne, Switzerland, on June 15, 2024.

The United Arab Emirates has called for a unified response from Gulf nations to ongoing attacks by Iran.

Early Wednesday, Iranian missiles and drones targeted Bahrain and Kuwait, which Tehran said was in response to US strikes against coastal installations in Iran.

An Iranian strike aimed at Kuwait killed one person and injured others at the country’s international airport, according to Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry. Video showed extensive damage inside a passenger terminal.

The UAE Foreign Ministry said it “strongly condemns the Iranian terrorist attacks that targeted Bahrain.”

“In light of the repeated Iranian aggression” against Bahrain and Kuwait, “there must be a firm, unified, and cohesive Gulf stance,” said Anwar Gargash, an adviser to the UAE presidency.

“No Gulf state should be left to face targeting alone, as the security of the Arab Gulf states is interconnected, their interests are shared, and their fate is one,” Gargash said in a post on X.

“This aggression does not target a specific state, but rather all of us.”

The UAE has consistently argued for a tougher collective response by members of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the face of continuing Iranian attacks.

“Enough with the condemning statements against the Iranian regime’s terrorism towards our sisters Kuwait and Bahrain without a firm stance as a unified bloc,” wrote Sultan Al-Nuaimi, Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) on X Wednesday.

“Yes to dialogue and diplomatic solutions, but from a position of strength, not appeasement that the Iranian regime interprets as weakness,” Al-Nuaimi wrote.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry affirmed the Emirate’s “total rejection of targeting civilian objects and vital facilities,” and said the region must be spared “from the consequences of unjustified attacks.”
